One of the questions I get asked most often is a simple one, do you need a model portfolio session, or a model update? They sound similar, and on the surface they're both about getting great photos of your child, but they're actually built for quite different stages of a modelling journey. Getting the right one makes a real difference, both to the photos you end up with and to how useful they are once agencies see them.

What a Model Portfolio Session Is For

A model portfolio session is really the starting point. It's designed for children who are new to modelling, whether you're putting together your first set of images to submit to agencies, or your child simply wants to see if they enjoy being in front of a camera before taking things further.

Because this is often someone's very first proper shoot, I keep things calm and unpressured. We'll start with a pre-shoot consultation to plan the session properly, then spend three to four hours in the studio together with unlimited outfit changes, so there's plenty of time to build a genuine range of natural expressions and simple, clean looks that agencies know how to read. You'll come away with 8 fully retouched images, sized and ready to send off with an application, with further images available afterwards if you'd like more.

If your child has never modelled before and you're exploring whether it's something they'd enjoy, this is the one to start with.

What a Model Update Session Is For

A model update session is for children who are already signed with an agency and modelling. Agencies ask for fresh images every so often, children grow and change quickly, and a photo that worked brilliantly six months ago might not reflect how they look today.

These sessions are a little more focused, since they're often built around a specific brief from your agency. If you've been sent one, I'll work directly to it, covering exactly the looks and shots they've asked for. It's a 2 hour session with up to 3 outfit changes, and you'll come away with 4 fully retouched images, a clear, supportive refresh of what your agency already has on file, with the option to add more if you need a wider set.

If your child is already represented and it's simply been a while since their last shoot, this is the one you need.

A Quick Way to Decide

If you're still not sure which applies to you, a simple way to think about it: a portfolio session is about getting started, an update session is about staying current. New to modelling, go with a portfolio session. Already signed and it's been a while, go with an update.

And if you're not sure whether your child needs an agency at all before their first shoot, that's a completely normal question too, plenty of children do a portfolio session simply to explore the idea, with no agency involved yet.
